Joshua L. Fox, M.D., F.A.A.D.
Medical Director |
Dr. Fox earned his Medical Degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He completed an internship at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, followed by a four-year dermatology residency at the New York University School of Medicine. A Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dr. Fox is known nationwide as a leading authority in the field of dermatology, with an expertise in skin cancer, cosmetic surgery and laser procedures. He has been an expert resource for the public interest on dermatologic topics for the major television networks, radio stations and national newspapers and magazines. He is the official spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
Dr. Fox has received multiple research and clinical awards including recognition from Top Doctors, Who's Who, the International Society of Dermatology and the prestigious Husic Award for most outstanding research. In addition, his service has been recognized by multiple hospitals, civic, educational and community organizations. He has been on the advisory boards of both the Psoriasis Foundation and National Rosacea Foundation, among others. With an extensive background in research, Dr. Fox has presented his findings on a wide range of subjects from laser techniques and cosmetic procedures to stretch marks and scars. He has been Chief of Dermatology of several major teaching hospitals including Mt. Sinai Hospital of Queens and Jamaica Medical Center and is currently on the staff of ten NY area hospitals.
In 1987, Dr. Fox founded the AAD Melanoma/Skin Cancer Prevention Program in Queens, NY. He is an educator as much as he is a physician and he has worked tirelessly to develop effective community screening programs and to increase skin cancer awareness and prevention. He later developed a dermatology and skin cancer research and advocacy forum for patients and physicians, called the New Age Skin Research Foundation (www.newageskin.org ). He serves as President of the Foundation.
Dr. Fox is founder and director of Advanced Dermatology, P.C. and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery. He and his associates have expanded the practice into the one of largest in the region for dermatology, laser & cosmetic surgery. The practice owns more lasers than any other hospital or dermatology practice on the East Coast, and has been a resource center for educating dermatologists, laser surgeons, cosmetic surgeons and others about laser procedures, skin cancer and cosmetic surgery techniques. |

| Jason S. Applebaum, M.D., F.A.A.D. |
Dr. Applebaum earned his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He graduated with honors and received special distinction for his intensive research in molecular biology. Dr. Applebaum completed his internal medicine internship at the New York University Medical Center and his dermatology residency at the University of Chicago.
During his post-graduate training in Chicago, Dr. Applebaum conducted extensive research in his field, particularly in the area of melanoma, and has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of the National Cancer Institute . He has presented his findings at multiple conferences of the Chicago Dermatologic Society.
With extensive training and experience in laser surgery and cosmetic surgery, Dr. Applebaum specializes in facial rejuvenation and scar treatment. He joined our team at Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in 1999. Board certified in dermatology, Dr. Applebaum is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and is a graduate member of the American Medical Association and the Society for Investigative Dermatology. |

| Lance Barazani, M.D., F.A.A.D. |
Dr. Barazani earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. As a student there, he was selected as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and was also honored with the Alfred Schwartz Award for Pathology. He served his internal medicine residency at the University Hospital East Setauket, NY. He continued his training as associate physician at The Rockefeller University Laboratory for Investigative Dermatology in NY, where he completed a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship before completing his dermatology residency at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Barazani has conducted research work on skin disorders and wound healing, with his findings published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and other peer-reviewed medical journals.
As a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons he performs natural hair transplants regularly and is a leading expert. He was one of the first physicians on Long Island to perform cosmetic Botox ® treatments in 1996. He is recognized by Botox ® Cosmetic as a member of the National Education Faculty, an honor limited to very few physicians nationwide. Dr. Barazani has been a member of Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery since 1994. |

| Francis X. DiSpaltro, M.D. |
Dr. DiSpaltro joined Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in 2003. He is experienced in many areas of medical as well as cosmetic dermatology and offers his patients a wide range of treatments available in our offices.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Binghamton University and pursued his medical degree at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara. Dr. DiSpaltro went on to complete a sub-internship as well as an internship in General Surgery at Downstate Medical Center. He joined the United States Army Medical Corps where he was a Captain and served as the Chief of the clinic at The Kimbrough Army Hospital in Maryland.
Upon completion of his duties in the military, Dr. DiSpaltro furthered his education through an internal medicine residency at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center. He practiced Emergency Medicine for several years while pursuing research in immunology as well as in clinical trials at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York where he worked with world renowned dermatologists. He has published many articles in peer reviewed journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and has given presentations at the national meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology.
In 1999 Dr. DiSpaltro went on to further his studies by returning to a residency in dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York where he completed his training. He joined Advanced Dermatology shortly after to offer his expertise in medical as well as state of the art cosmetic procedures available at Advanced Dermatology His creative spirit and his attention to detail makes him particularly suited to the cosmetic aspect of dermatology.

| Philip Fried, M.D. |
Dr. Fried graduated magna cum laude from Manhattan's Touro College before earning his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. He completed his general surgery internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and served a dermatology residency at New York Medical College in Valhalla. He worked as attending physician in the Emergency Room of both Jamaica Hospital and Bellevue Hospital in New York.
Dr. Fried joined Advanced Dermatology, P.C. and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in 1990. He is board certified in dermatology and has special interest and expertise in cosmetic and laser surgery, varicose vein treatment and autologous fat transplantation and meso therapy (vitamin injection to dissolve subcutaneous fat).
A dedicated researcher in his field, Dr. Fried has conducted numerous studies on dermatological diseases and has done special investigative research on wounds and burn healing. His work has been published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases and Annals of Internal Medicine . |

| Suzanne Jennifer Friedler, M.D. |
Dr. Suzanne J. Friedler is a board certified fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, with expertise in many areas of medical and cosmetic dermatology. She is a lecturer at national medical conferences and an instructor for three residency programs in New York.
After completing a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at Binghamton University, Dr. Friedler went on to the New York University School of Medicine where she received academic awards and participated in honors program research. She completed her dermatology residency at Downstate Medical Center where she also participated in clinical research and was the author of multiple publications.
Dr. Friedler offers patients state of the art procedures including Fraxel non-ablative resurfacing, Thermage skin tightening, endovenous laser vein treatment and general laser therapy for scars, tattoos, hair removal, rosacea, stretch marks, acne, melasma, brown spots, angiomas, and many other conditions. She has served as an injection trainer for Botox® Cosmetic & has become adept with the latest innovations in skin fillers. She treats both adult and pediatric patients. Dr.Friedler has been a member of Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery since 2002. She is conversational in four languages. |

| Meryl Blecker Joerg, M.D. |
Dr. Joerg graduated magna cum laude from Rhode Island ' s Brown University. During her studies there she participated in special clinical research involving skin grafts and hand reconstruction. She pursued medical studies at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, where she earned her Medical Degree and was selected for the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
She completed her medical internship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, followed by a dermatology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. Dr. Joerg spent a year in France, where she undertook advanced dermatological studies at L ' Hospital St. Louis in Paris, the largest dermatological training center in France.
With a keen interest in fine arts, Dr. Joerg spent more than a year in Italy studying sculpture and painting, primarily of the face and human form. With her artistic abilities, visual strength and dexterity, she gives extra attention to fine detail in her cosmetic procedures, including fillers, resurfacing, acne scar treatments and surgical techniques.
Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Joerg has been a member of Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery since 1997.
Active in competitive sports her entire life, she has also enjoyed traveling and skiing all over the world. She speaks five languages. |

| Aza Lefkowitz, M.D., F.A.A.D. |
Dr. Lefkowitz is a summa cum laude graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, where he earned his Medical Degree. As a student at SUNY, he was honored with the prestigious Andrew T. Salzberg Award for Superior Achievement in Medical Studies. His medical internship was completed at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. Dr. Lefkowitz attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to complete a residency in dermatology. In his final year, he was appointed Chief Resident in Dermatology.
To further his postgraduate training, Dr. Lefkowitz served a one-year fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery at East Setauket University Hospital, NY. This is an American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology (ACMMSCO) approved program for Mohs. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is an advanced treatment procedure for skin cancer, which offers the highest cure rate while preserving healthy tissue, thus minimizing scarring and aesthetic impact. Dr. Lefkowitz has authored over a dozen peer-reviewed research papers and presentations on skin cancer and advanced dermatological laser treatments.
Dr. Lefkowitz's practice is primarily surgical. With his precision and expertise, he is especially well regarded for the exceptional and cosmetically elegant way in which he repairs his patients' Mohs defects. Board certified in both Dermatology and Mohs Microsurgery, Dr. Lefkowitz has been a member of Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery since 2001.

| John Troccoli, M.D., F.A.A.D. |
Dr. Troccoli was born in Los Angeles, California, and attended Hollywood High School, where he graduated with honors. He is the elder of two brothers, and is the first in his immediate family to attend college. He attended Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut , where he graduated summa cum laude with distinction in psycho-biology.
He earned his Medical Degree from Harvard University in Boston and was awarded a student research scholarship, dedicating an additional year of studies to Photomedicine. Photomedicine is a recently developed area of study, focusing on the effects of electromagnetic radiation, such as ultraviolet, visible and infrared light, mediated through the skin. He conducted pioneering research in the development of multiple-pulsed laser technology, and was awarded a Residency Research Award by the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery
Dr. Troccoli remained in the Boston area for his postgraduate studies, completing an internship at Boston City Hospital and a residency through the Harvard Dermatology Program. He has given presentations and collaborated on publications in the field of dermatological laser surgery.
Dr. Troccoli is board certified in dermatology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. He has worked as an associate at Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery since 1997. Dr. Troccoli has traveled extensively throughout the world and is fluent in Spanish.

| Valerie Goldburt,M.D.,PhD, FAAD. |
As an undergraduate at Harvard University, Dr. Valerie Goldburt began
her career studying the mechanisms of genetic switches, completing her
studies in biochemistry with honors. She continued her interest in
science and medicine as a graduate student at Columbia University in
New York, where she completed a Master's degree studying the effects
of ultraviolet light on cancer proteins. Dr. Goldburt then earned an
M.D. from Downstate Medical Center, where she also completed a Ph.D.
in Microbiology and Immunology, studying immune defense mechanisms.
During her six years there, she was her medical school's
representative at the American Association of Medical Colleges
conferences around the nation. An outstanding scholar, she received
grants from the Howard Hughes Institue and the NIH for her
undergraduate education and her medical school career was fully funded
by several grants, as well as the NIH.
Dr. Goldburt completed her internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in
Manhattan and a dermatology residency at Downstate Medical Center. She
enjoys traveling throughout the United States and Europe, and has
given many presentations at professional meetings. She is a member of
the American Academy of Dermatology and the Dermatology Foundation.
Dr. Goldburt particularly enjoys intricate surgical and cosmetic
procedures, having highly-trained dexterity from her years as a
conservatory-trained pianist. She has a special interest in skin care
products and has worked as a consultant on skin care for cosmetics
corporations Lancôme and L'Oreal. Dr. Goldburt is board certified in
dermatology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
She joined the practice at Advanced Dermatology and the Center for
Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in 2007. |

Robert Ecker, M.D., F.A.A.D. |
Dr. Ecker began his medical education as a Biochemistry major at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He worked for nearly a decade as a research scientist. The primary focus of his expertise was pharmaceutical product support as well as multiple processes of biochemical screening for Panlabs, Inc. and AXYS Pharmaceuticals. He earned his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. As a student there he was given the George F. Odland Scholar Award, an academic endowment presented by the University Department of Dermatology and the Herzog Foundation.
Dr. Ecker attended the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, where he completed his internship in internal medicine. He relocated to Wisconsin to serve his three-year dermatology residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics Department of Dermatology, acting as Chief Resident in his final year. He worked in private practice in Tennessee and was appointed Clinical Instructor at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga Department of Medicine before joining Advanced Dermatology.
As an associate at Advanced Dermatology, Dr. Ecker provides a full range of medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology, with special expertise in dermatologic laser treatments. He has a special touch with children, and has enjoyed having a large number of them as his patients. He is board certified in dermatology and is a member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
A musician and avid music fan, Dr. Ecker plays guitar and banjo and performs in musical theater when he gets the opportunity. He enjoys gourmet cooking, and has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia with his wife.

Robert L. Kraft, M.D., F.A.C.S. |
Dr. Kraft earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, magna cum laude, from Columbia College of Columbia University in the City of New York and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. His interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery began at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he was mentored by Drs. Thomas J. Krizek and Stephan Ariyan, luminaries in academic medicine. His medical school thesis on the effect of preoperative chemotherapy on wound healing was awarded the Gold Prize of the American College of Surgeons for excellence in research. Following graduation from Yale in 1978, Dr. Kraft completed his surgical internship, general surgery residency, a research fellowship and plastic surgery residency at the combined program of Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He served as chief resident in plastic and reconstructive surgery, later becoming a clinical instructor on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Since entering private practice in 1984, Dr. Kraft has performed over 15,000 plastic surgical procedures, covering the entire spectrum of the specialty, from cosmetic to reconstruction. His extensive experience includes special interests in breast augmentation, reduction and lift, abdominoplasty and liposuction as well as the full range of facial aesthetic procedures. He holds lifetime board certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a founding member of the New York State Association of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. Kraft’s artistic talent, creativity and elegance are apparent in all of his work, whether in the operating room or in his most recent endeavor, a planned book to be entitled “Why Don’t I Look Like My Mommy?”, a child’s guide to plastic surgery.

Elan B. Singer, M.D. |
Dr. Elan B. Singer received his Medical Degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine before completing his plastic and reconstructive surgery training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He remained in New York and continued his training as Aesthetic Surgery Fellow at Lenox Hill Hospital and the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, where he studied under New York’s top leaders in the field.
Dr. Singer is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is skilled in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery of the body, face and breast. He has an added interest in body contouring and aesthetic procedures, which include post-bariatric surgery, abdominoplasty, breast lift, body lift and liposuction. Dr. Singer has had the specific and unique training in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery that is required for the successful outcome of these procedures.
Dr. Singer has performed reconstructive surgery on patients from all over the world and has taken an active role in surgical missions in foreign countries. He has donated his time and surgical expertise to Iraq Star, Inc., a charitable foundation dedicated to providing reconstructive surgery to returning Iraq War Veterans with disfiguring wounds. Dr. Singer is a commissioned officer in the Navy Reserve and is also a Clinical Instructor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York and the American Society of Plastic Surgery.

Gregory A. Pistone, M.D |
Dr. Pistone is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was presented with the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Award. He earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. During his time there, he worked in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and performed research involving the skin’s sensory receptors as well as studies on ways to improve the survival of skin grafts and flaps. After completing an Internship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, he completed his dermatologic training at the Temple University Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Pistone has operated a successful private practice since 1984, with offices and state of the art surgical center located in the greater Philadelphia area. He has served as Chief of Dermatology within the Thomas Jefferson University Health System and is currently on the faculty of both Thomas Jefferson and Drexel University Schools of Medicine, where he teaches physicians-in-training about hair transplantation.
Dr. Pistone is a pioneer in the fields of dermatology and hair restoration. The contributions Dr. Pistone has made in the field of hair transplantation as well as exhibiting excellence in patient care earned him the honor of being peer-selected as one of the "Top Plastic Surgeons" for Philadelphia Magazine. He has been featured in countless newspaper and magazine articles and has made numerous television and radio appearances educating the public about the art and science of hair restoration. As one of only a small percentage of hair transplantation specialists qualified to successfully perform Follicular Unit Transplantation, Dr. Pistone has been honing, refining and perfecting the scientific and artistic techniques essential to recreating soft, natural, living hairlines. The final result is the patient’s own hair re-growing along the natural hairline. This technique is indeed a breakthrough for men and women experiencing hair loss.

Melissa Sanoff Weiner, RPA-C

Melissa joined Advanced Dermatology in 1995 and worked as a Medical Assistant for many years. She completed the Physician Assistant Program at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and received her certification before returning to Advanced Dermatology as a Physician Assistant.
During her studies at Weill Medical College, she performed clinical rotations in all major fields of medicine, working at various hospitals throughout the New York City region. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Surgical Physician Assistants.
Melissa has thorough knowledge of the practice of dermatology, including Mohs skin cancer surgery and has worked with thousands of patients at Advanced Dermatology. With the broad range of conditions that are managed and treated here, she enjoys the variety of her work. Melissa takes the extra step with all patients to get to know them and their families on a personal level. She especially appreciates the satisfaction of caring for teens and helping them improve their self-esteem by improving their skin.
Melissa is married and has two boys. She enjoys movies, reading and traveling with her family. |

Christopher Byrne, MPAS,

Mr. Byrne has been a Certified Physician Assistant at Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser & Cosmetic Surgery since 2004. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from New York University, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the New York Institute of Technology. Mr. Byrne also completed a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies with a concentration in dermatology from the University of Nebraska School of Medicine. He has completed clerkships in every major branch of medicine, including internal medicine, pediatrics and dermatology. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the New York Society of Physician Assistants. He is a founding member of the New York Dermatology Physician Assistants, and currently serves as its Vice President.
With an innate compassion for others, Mr. Byrne became a Physician Assistant to enable him to help people, particularly with their skin problems. As a teen, he suffered with acne and knows firsthand how skin problems can affect a person's daily life.
Mr. Byrne grew up in the Long Island area, where and he and his wife are now raising their daughter. In their spare time they enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking and camping.

Mohiba Khan Tareen, M.D.

Dr. Tareen is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan, where she was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. She continued her postgraduate studies at the University, where she earned her medical degree and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In her senior year of medical school, she received two different and distinct honors. The Michigan Association of Physicians from India (MAPI) awarded her work with an academic scholarship and the American Medical Women’s Association awarded her as one of the five top female graduates in her class.
Dr. Tareen completed her dermatology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, New York. During this time, she also lectured extensively and has had her work published in the medical literature. Dr. Tareen is currently a clinical instructor in Dermatology at Columbia and is serving as Cosmetic and Laser Fellow at Advanced Dermatology. She is a member of the American Association of Dermatology and the Women’s Dermatologic Society.
In her free time, Dr. Tareen enjoys golf, spinning, skiing and swimming. She and her husband, also a physician, reside in New York City. |
