Shopping for Skin Care Products? Ignore These Claims!

Shopping for Skin Care Products? Ignore These Claims!

There is an overabundance of skin care products on the market today, each one claiming superiority over the next. As a consumer, you may be overwhelmed by the choices available, whether it is at your local drugstore or the cosmetics department at the mall. But did you know that many of those claims are actually meaningless? Here are 4 claims in particular that should not sway your purchasing decision:

  1. The more expensive a product is, the better it will be – While you often get what you pay for, this does not necessarily apply to skin care products. Extensive research has been conducted over the past few decades, showing that excellent and subpar products exist at all prices. So don’t blindly pay extra and think you’re getting a better product. Check the ingredients of each product and purchase the one best suited to your skin type. It’s best to ask your dermatologist if a certain skin care product will benefit your skin.
  2. “Dermatologist tested” or “dermatologist approved” ensures quality – These claims have no specific standards in the world of skin care products. Besides, just because one dermatologist likes a certain product does not mean that another one will feel the same way. To make sure you are buying a quality product, look ones containing skin-repairing ingredients, broad-spectrum sunscreens, cell-communicating ingredients, exfoliants, and antioxidants.
  3. Hypoallergenic products are best for sensitive skin – There are no standards to officially label a product as hypoallergenic, or less likely to trigger allergic reactions. If you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin, look for products that have few irritants. Irritants may include cleansers, fragrances and alcohol.
  4. “Specially formulated for mature skin” is best for middle-aged individuals – A wide range of skin types exist, regardless of age. Instead, look for products that cater to your specific skin type and concerns.
