ThermiRF

Thermi RF Fat Removal

What is Thermi RF?

Thermi RF is a minimally-invasive treatment to both remove excess fat and tighten loose skin. It uses radiofrequency energy to heat fat cells which are eventually drained from the body through urination. No downtime is required after Thermi RF, making it an ideal choice for today’s busy, jam-packed lifestyles. Thermi RF has been cleared by the FDA for “thermistor‐regulated energy delivery for both micro-surgical and non-invasive aesthetic applications  for dermatological and general surgical applications in soft tissue and nerves.”

How does Thermi RF work?

Thermi RF delivers its radiofrequency energy via a cannula that is inserted under the patient’s skin. The cannula heats the tissue beneath the skin, melting the fat and preparing it for excretion from the body. The heat from the cannula also stimulates collagen production beneath the skin, correcting the skin laxity that commonly occurs after fat reduction.

How Does Thermi RF Differ From Other Non-invasive Fat Treatments?

While many non-invasive fat removal treatments currently exist, Thermi RF is the only one whose temperature can be adjusted to effectively treat each patient’s specific area(s) of concern. As soon as the fat tissues have reached the proper temperature, an electronic clock begins calculating the appropriate time for the treatment. The Thermi RF’s adjustable temperature greatly enhances patient comfort and safety.

ThermiRF Treatments

The Thermi RF can treat many different areas. Patients seeking toxin-free glabella relaxation can benefit from Thermi RF. It can provide sub-dermal skin tightening on the body and treat cellulite. Additional uses for the Thermi RF include treating axillary hyperhidrosis, smoothing and tightening the skin, and correcting vaginal laxity. Its dual capabilities for fat removal and skin tightening offer a full body contouring without requiring additional treatment modalities.

The areas to be treated with Thermi RF are cleansed and a gel is applied to the skin. The cool tip of the handpiece is then placed onto the skin. As the Thermi RF’s radiofrequency energy is sent through the skin, you will feel a soothing, warm, sensation. For your comfort and safety, your dermatologist will customize the temperature of the Thermi RF based on your specific treatment. Depending on the area being treated, a Thermi RF treatment session usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes

An ideal candidate for Thermi RF has stubborn pockets of excess fat on their body that have not responded to diet and exercise. He or she should be in good health, with no underlying conditions. To find out if Thermi RF is right for you, a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists will be necessary.

Multiple Thermi RF treatments may be necessary to achieve satisfactory results. The exact number of treatments you will need may vary based upon your specific goals. During your consultation, your dermatologist will determine the amount of Thermi RF treatments you will need.

Thermi RF Consultation

During your Thermi RF consultation, your dermatologist will examine your area(s) of concern and answer any questions you may have. Your medical history will be reviewed, as certain conditions may exclude one’s candidacy. If you are deemed a suitable candidate for Thermi RF, your dermatologist will explain the approach for your specific treatment, including the number of sessions you will need, and discuss the expected before and after loose skin treatment results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ThermiRF, ThermiSmooth, and ThermiTight?
Female face, before and after ThermiRF Skin Tightening treatment, side view

ThermiRF is the name of the machine itself. This machine can be used to perform the ThermiTight procedure where a small puncture site is made, anesthesia is injected, and then a small probe is gently passed just under the skin delivering the RF energy deeply to the tissue. ThermiSmooth is entirely non-invasive and uses a different probe to deliver the same type of energy on top of the skin, heating the tissue topically.

What is the downtime after a ThermiTight treatment?

ThermiTight is quite tolerable. It is minimally invasive and performed under local anesthesia with very little downtime. Some slight redness and swelling is expected but lasts only a day or two. It is always nice to have a day or two off after a procedure like this though. Most patients are able to return to normal activities after 24 hours.

What is the difference between ThermiTight and Thermage?

Thermage and ThermiTight are similar in that they both use radiofrequency energy to induce skin tightening but that is about where the similarities end. Thermage is non-invasive and uses an external applicator pressed up against the skin to deliver the energy from the outside. ThermiTight is minimally invasive, and delivers the radio frequency energy via a probe that is inserted under the skin. After the treatment site is appropriately anesthetized a small puncture is made to the side of the treatment area and then the probe is slowly passed under the skin to be tightened.

ThermiRF procedures vs. surgery – which gives the best result?

ThermiRF procedures offer modest results in comparison to a surgical intervention like a facelift. These modest results are ideal for someone with only mild to moderate skin laxity.

How long does it take to get results with ThermiTight?

Like many of the devices that use heat to tighten the skin, the results are not immediate. They can take several weeks to a few months.

How many treatments are needed with ThermiTight?

The answer depends slightly on what the starting point is and just how much tightening would be required. The ThermiTight procedure is a little more invasive than ThermiSmooth, but good results can be seen after just one treatment. Of course, for those that do not get the response desired it could be repeated but generally multiple treatments are not required. ThermiSmooth, which is less invasive, may require 5-6 treatments for best results.
