Dysport Injections

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a substance used to temporarily disable muscles by blocking nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract. While it is commonly used to treat people with muscle spasms or neck pain, Dysport can also be used for aesthetic purposes for people under 65 years of age. Many adults develop lines between their eyebrows that grow deeper with age. These lines appear when muscles around the eyebrows contract and tighten, producing the appearance of wrinkles, even in young adults. Repeated facial movements, such as frowning or squinting, can cause facial lines to become more visible over time.To mitigate this effect, prescription Dysport can be injected in and around the frown lines on the forehead to reduce muscle activity that causes these lines. The effects are temporary, though, and will require repeated treatments, which are proven to be just as effective as the first round of treatment. Dysport is suitable for patients between 18 and 65 years of age with moderate to severe frown lines. Dysport is currently offered in our offices in Queens, NY, Bergen County, NJ and more. Click here for a list of all our locations.

What Are the Ingredients in Dysport?

Dysport is a purified formula containing an active ingredient, Botulinum Toxin Type A, as well as inactive ingredients, such as human albumin and lactose. Dysport may also contain protein from cow’s milk.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

Dysport treatment involves administering injections into the muscle at five different points along the forehead, as determined by your dermatologist. The formula temporarily reduces muscle activity in the localized area, preventing forehead wrinkles from forming. When properly administered and barring complications, only the muscles in the targeted area are disabled. The rest of your facial mobility should be unaffected. Results from a single treatment typically last up to three months. It is not recommended to repeat treatment until after 90 days have passed. Clinical trials in the United States have demonstrated effectiveness of Dysport for up to four rounds of treatment

How Do I Schedule a Treatment Session?

The first step to getting Dysport treatment is to schedule a consultation with an experienced dermatologist at the Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery. The doctor will inquire about your medical history, including any conditions or allergies you may have that could conflict with Dysport. Be sure to tell the doctor about all medications you have been taking to ensure there is no interference with Dysport. If you are allergic to protein in cow’s milk or have had an allergic reaction in the past to any other botulinum toxin product (including Myobloc or Botox), do not undergo a Dysport procedure. If you have a history of respiratory problems, undergoing treatment may put you at risk of further weakening the muscles you use to breathe. During your consultation, the doctor may also examine your frown lines or wrinkles to map out the five injection sites for maximum results. Once the dermatologist determines you are a good candidate for Dysport, you will schedule a date for the procedure. Each treatment session can last anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. Following the procedure, you may resume your daily activities immediately. A major benefit of Dysport treatment is that there is no recovery time. The results from Dysport treatment are temporary, lasting up to 90 days. If you like the aesthetic results and wish to maintain them, talk to your doctor about follow-up treatments. It is advised to wait at least 90 days between each treatment, given the potential risks of botulinum toxin products.

Side effects of using Dysport

Before it was approved for aesthetic procedures in the United States in 2009, Dysport was being used abroad in 34 countries for almost two decades. The safety of Dysport has been studied in more than 2,400 aesthetic patients in U.S. clinical trials. It has not, however, been studied for more than 12 repeated treatments. Its effects on people under 18 are also not well understood, nor is it known whether Dysport is effective against wrinkles other than frown lines. But, as with other medical procedures, the treatment does carry some risks and possible side effects. Before you agree to undergo treatment, make sure you fully understand these risks and side effects, so you know what to watch for after the procedure. Side effects may be mild, including irritation in the nose or throat or a reaction at the site of the injection. Some additional reported side effects include the following:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Sinus and throat irritation
  • Allergic reactions including itchiness, rash, wheezing
  • Eyelid swelling or drooping
  • Dry mouth
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Weakness
  • Neck pain
  • Respiratory tract infections

Other more serious side effects are also possible and warrant immediate medical attention. Dysport is a botulinum toxin. While it is injected into the forehead area, the substance can spread, causing serious problems in other parts of the body. This condition is called botulism and can be life threatening. Some symptoms of botulism include difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, a loss of strength throughout the body, double or blurred vision, drooping or swollen eyelids, a change in the voice, or loss of bladder control.

If left untreated, botulism can result in death. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor or emergency care immediately. Avoid driving or operating machinery when you have these symptoms to avoid putting yourself or others in danger. If you see any of these symptoms, please set up a consultation with one of our of our doctors in Queens, NY, Bergen County, NJ and Long Island,NY.

Be aware that these side effects could surface within hours of the treatment, or even weeks after the procedure. Also, never assume that your Dysport dosage is the same or comparable with any other dosage of botulinum toxins that you may have used previously. Be sure to read the Medication Guide for Dysport while also discussing and asking questions to your doctor.

Those at greatest risk of botulism are children or adults being treated for muscle spasms, especially those who may have existing conditions that increase their risk.

Medical History?

It is highly critical that you are completely candid with your doctor to ensure there are no complications during or after your Dysport treatment. Below are aspects of your medical history that you must tell your doctor about:

  • Diabetes
  • Any disease of the muscles or nervous system, including Lou Gehrig’s disease or Lambert-Eaton syndrome.
  • Allergic reactions to botulinum toxin products in the past such as Botox or Myobloc
  • Heart disorders
  • Past surgery on the face that may have caused scarring

Alert your doctor if you suspect you may be pregnant, if you are breastfeeding a child, or if you are planning to become pregnant in the near future. While there have not been proven impacts of Dysport on babies or pregnant women, the exact effects are not known, presenting additional risk.

Also be sure to tell your doctor about all medications you currently take or plan to take. Certain drugs may interfere with Dysport if they are still in your system when you receive treatment. Medications include both prescription and nonprescription drugs such as antibiotics, muscle relaxants, pain or allergy/cold medicines, sleeping pills, as well as natural or vitamin supplements. If you have tried Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A), Myobloc (Botulinum Toxin Type B), or any other botulinum toxin in the past, be sure to tell your doctor which exact product you used.

Why choose  Dysport?

Three randomized clinical trials involving 376 adults age 19 to 75 have validated the efficacy of Dysport in bringing about temporary aesthetic improvements in facial lines, or glabellar lines. A segment of the adults were given Dysport, while others were given placebos. The subjects all had moderately severe glabellar lines, but did not have any conditions that could affect the results, including scarring or marked ptosis.

The most important benefit of Dysport is that it produces visible results. A large majority of subjects in the clinical trials showed improvements in their frown lines, based on a 4-point grading scale assessed by physicians. At least 86 percent improved their frown lines by at least 1 point on the grading scale. Dysport has also proven to be just as effective for up to four additional treatment rounds. Also, patients need zero downtime after undergoing a treatment. They can resume their normal schedule immediately.
