What are Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins and spider veins are two distinct types of damaged or dysfunctional blood vessels visible beneath the skin. Spider veins are small, flat, web-like clusters of red, blue or purple vessels close to the skin’s surface, while varicose veins are larger, rope-like veins that may bulge visibly and cause physical discomfort.

Spider veins (Telangiectasia)

Spider veins, clinically known as telangiectasia, are typically harmless, dilated superficial vessels less than 1 mm in diameter that appear as fine, web-like patterns on the skin. They are primarily symptomless, though they can occasionally produce mild itching or burning and can be a cosmetic concern. Common triggers include sun exposure, hormonal changes, genetics and the natural aging process.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are bulging veins greater than 3 mm in diameter that can appear tangled and raised beneath the skin, most commonly in the legs. Unlike spider veins, they frequently cause functional symptoms including the following:

  • Aching
  • Heaviness
  • Swelling
  • Fatigue

Left untreated, severe cases can become a potentially dangerous medical concern, and progress to chronic venous insufficiency, skin changes or ulceration.

How Common Are Vein Conditions?

Vein conditions are extremely prevalent. According to data from the American Heart Association, approximately 23% of U.S. adults have varicose veins, while 80% of men and 85% of women have a combination of spider veins, visible veins and varicose veins.

Comprehensive Care at Advanced Dermatology, P.C.

The board-certified dermatologists at Advanced Dermatology, P.C. treat spider veins and varicose veins using minimally invasive, in-office procedures.

Severe varicose veins involving significant venous reflux or deep vein insufficiency may require evaluation and treatment by a vascular specialist. When that is the case, we will refer patients appropriately.

Vein Treatment Options at Advanced Dermatology, P.C.

Advanced Dermatology, P.C. offers minimally invasive, in-office medical vein removal and cosmetic vein removal treatments, including sclerotherapy, laser vein removal and endovenous laser ablation.

Sclerotherapy

Performed entirely in-office with no anesthesia required, sclerotherapy is the gold standard for many visible veins, including spider veins and small varicose veins on the legs. Most patients need two to four sessions, progressing from larger to smaller veins for optimal clearance. Treatment is quick, and most patients can return to normal activities the same day. The veins usually fade over the next few weeks.

Laser vein treatment

Laser vein treatment is a needle-free, concentrated light energy delivery to the vein wall, causing collapse and gradual absorption.

This intervention uses the CoolTouch CTEV, a clinically validated laser that produces effective results with minimal discomfort. This approach is best suited for facial telangiectasia, very fine spider veins and areas where injection is impractical, such as around the nose or eyes. Advanced Dermatology, P.C. also offers advanced, minimally invasive vein procedures to treat varicose veins while preserving healthy vein structure.

MINT (Minimally Invasive No-Touch Technique)

MINT is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that uses a no-touch approach to close the affected vein without directly touching of surrounding tissue. This helps reduce irritation in the area while still treating the problem vein effectively.

Because the technique is gentle, patients often experience less bruising and discomfort compared to more traditional vein procedures. MINT is performed in the office using local anesthesia, and most patients return to normal activities the same day.

ASVAL (Ambulatory Selective Varicose Vein Ablation under Local Anesthesia)

ASVAL is a minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins by targeting only the veins causing symptoms or visible changes. It is designed to preserve healthy veins whenever possible, which supports normal blood flow.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients are able to walk immediately afterward and return to their normal routine quickly. ASVAL may be recommended for select types of varicose veins based on your symptoms and evaluation.

Cosmetic vein removal

For patients whose primary concern is appearance – visible spider veins, facial redness or surface-level leg veins – Advanced Dermatology, P.C. offers a dedicated cosmetic vein removal track tailored to aesthetic goals. View cosmetic vein removal options.

Medical vein removal

When varicose veins cause physical symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling or skin changes, treatment moves beyond cosmetic concern into medically necessary care.

Our board-certified medical dermatologists evaluate and treat symptomatic vein conditions to determine the most appropriate intervention based on clinical findings. In documented cases, insurance coverage may apply. Learn more about our medical vein removal treatments.

Varicose vein treatment

Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging veins that require a different medical approach than spider veins. We offer personalized treatment plans that might involve sclerotherapy for smaller varicose veins or CoolTouch Endovenous Laser Ablation (CTEV) for deeper and  larger varicosities. Who Is a Candidate for Vein Treatment?

Most healthy adults bothered by the appearance or symptoms of spider veins or varicose veins are good candidates for vein treatment. A personalized consultation is the best way to confirm which approach is right for you.

Good candidates

Ideal candidates include adults who are self-conscious about visible spider veins or varicose veins, patients experiencing leg heaviness, aching or swelling and those who have completed their pregnancies.

Vein treatment is typically deferred until after pregnancy, as spider veins and varicose veins sometimes resolve on their own postpartum.

Candidacy complications

Vein treatment may not be appropriate for patients with an active blood clot or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), those who are currently pregnant or patients on certain blood-thinning medications. A consultation allows our dermatologists to review your health history and confirm your candidacy safely.

What To Expect from Vein Treatment

Vein treatment at Advanced Dermatology, P.C. is straightforward, well-tolerated and designed to fit into a normal day. Here is a brief overview of what the process looks like from start to finish.

Before your appointment

Skip lotion and moisturizer on the treatment area the day of your appointment and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Sclerotherapy patients should bring compression stockings or plan to put them on before leaving the office.

During treatment

Most vein treatments are completed in 30 to 60 minutes in our office. Depending on the procedure, little to no anesthesia is required. Patients walk out on their own 30 minutes post-procedure. There is no hospital stay and no surgical recovery period.

After treatment

Recovery varies by treatment type. Sclerotherapy patients wear compression stockings for one to two weeks, with bruising and gradual vein fading occurring over four to six weeks. After laser vein treatment, mild redness is normal and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 24 to 48 hours. New veins can develop over time, so maintenance sessions may be recommended to preserve results.

Does Insurance Cover Vein Treatment?

Whether insurance covers vein treatment depends on why you are seeking care. Being clear about this upfront helps clarify your coverage and options.

Cosmetic vein treatment

Treatment for spider veins that are bothersome in appearance only is typically considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance. Patients pursuing sclerotherapy or laser vein removal for aesthetic reasons should expect to pay out of pocket.

Medically necessary vein treatment

When varicose veins cause documented symptoms such as aching, swelling or heaviness, treatment may be covered by Medicare or commercial insurance.

Coverage generally requires objective documentation of venous reflux via duplex ultrasound, as well as evidence that conservative therapies such as compression stockings have been attempted first.

Every plan is different

Coverage rules vary by insurer and plan. Contact our office to help you verify your insurance coverage before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vein Treatment

Does vein treatment hurt?

Sclerotherapy causes mild stinging or pressure at the injection site that most patients describe as being brief and tolerable. Laser vein treatment feels like a quick snapping sensation on the skin. Most patients’ complete treatment without any anesthesia. Topical numbing cream is available on request if needed.

How many vein treatment sessions will I need?

Spider veins typically require two to four sclerotherapy sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Laser treatment generally needs one to three sessions. The exact number depends on the size, number and location of the veins being treated. Your dermatologist will provide a personalized estimate during your consultation.

Will treated veins come back?

Treated veins do not return. Once a vein is closed, it is gradually absorbed by the body and permanently eliminated. However, new veins can develop over time due to genetics, hormonal changes or lifestyle factors. Periodic maintenance sessions may be recommended to address any new vessels that form.

Can spider veins be treated on the face?

Yes. Facial spider veins and telangiectasia are commonly and effectively treated with laser therapy, which delivers targeted energy without needles. Sclerotherapy is generally reserved for leg veins. Your dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the location, size and depth of the veins involved.

Is spider vein treatment covered by insurance?

Spider vein removal for cosmetic purposes is not covered by most insurance plans and is typically an out-of-pocket expense. Treatment for symptomatic varicose veins may qualify for coverage if medically necessary criteria, such as duplex ultrasound documentation, are met. Contact our office for insurance verification assistance before your appointment.
