Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy for Spider & Varicose Veins

Spider veins are small, visible blood vessels that may appear blue, red, or purple and often form a spiderweb-like pattern on the skin. Spider veins are common and can affect people of all ages. While many patients seek treatment because of cosmetic concerns, some may also experience symptoms  such as itching, burning, or aching.

Pregnant women also report experiencing symptoms of spider veins and varicose veins. Fortunately, several treatment options are available to improve the appearance of spider veins and address related symptoms.

How Sclerotherapy Treats Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is a commonly used treatment option for spider veins and some smaller varicose veins. During the procedure, a provider injects a solution called a sclerosant into the targeted vein. This solution helps close the treated vein, allowing blood to naturally flow through healthier veins.

In some cases, additional techniques may be used to support treatment and improve the appearance of treated areas. Your provider will evaluate your veins and recommend the approach that best fits your needs and goals.

Sclerotherapy is performed in the office and typically requires little downtime. When necessary, a local anesthetic may be used to help minimize discomfort during the spider vein treatment procedure. Most patients can return to normal activities shortly after treatment, though your provider will provide specific aftercare instructions based on your treatment plan.

When appropriate, laser-based techniques may be also used to address certain spider veins on the legs and face.

What To Expect After Sclerotherapy

We want to ensure that our patients are comfortable before, during, and after our procedures. Walking after treatment is often encouraged to support healthy circulation. Your provider will provide specific aftercare instructions based on your treatment plan. Sclerotherapy may not be recommended for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain medical conditions. Your provider will determine whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
