While most of the concerns a dermatologist deals with have to do with the skin, they also are very much involved in the latest advances in fat reduction. Many of the newest procedures to reduce fat, because they are not invasive or surgical, are applied on top of the skin and treat through the skin to the fat layers. Since a dermatologist is the expert on anything that is applied to the skin, they have also become the experts at using these new fat reduction devices and are the best person to reach out to about your options.
Non-invasive treatments for fat usually will use either heat or cold to kill fat cells, which are then expelled naturally from the body. This process of dead fat cells being expelled can take a few months to be complete after your treatment. As of right now, the non-invasive fat reduction procedures are not able to remove large areas of fat and are not considered options for weight reduction. The purpose of non-invasive fat reduction treatments is to contour and shape your body after you have achieved an ideal weight with diet and exercise. Bulges of fat that won’t go away on the love handles (flanks), thighs, and stomach can all be treated with excellent results. You should expect a noticeable result but not at the same level as liposuction. While you can remove a lot more fat with liposuction it is also more invasive and expensive than the non-invasive options.
Both men and women tell our dermatologists that they want to get rid of their love handles. Love handles are areas of subcutaneous fat above the waist that are particularly resistant to diet and exercise. Sometimes love handles will not respond at all no matter how regularly you work out or how rigorously you adhere to your diet. The inner and outer thighs are a common area of concern where there are often stubborn bulges of fat. Again, CoolSculpting is the best non-invasive treatment for this area.
Recent advances in non-invasive fat reduction technology allow dermatologists to remove fat under the chin, which is often referred to as a “double chin.” Kybella and CoolSculpting are both used to treat double chin but utilize very different techniques for eliminating the fat. Kybella uses a series of injections of a product that kills fat cells. This often requires more than one treatment to see the best results. CoolSculpting uses an applicator that fits under the chin and pulls the fat into the applicator. Once the system starts, it begins cooling the area to a temperature that kills fat cells. CoolSculpting for double chin usually will only require one treatment but may require more in certain cases. These options became available only recently for this area and Advanced Dermatology, P.C. was among the first practices to begin using them.
Liposuction is an invasive but highly effective treatment for removing large areas of fat. The procedure is done in combination with another device that will heat up and liquefy the fat, making it easier to remove and also tightening the skin slightly in the process. Plastic surgeons are the doctors with the specialized training to perform liposuction and we have several excellent surgeons at Advanced Dermatology, P.C. who have many years of experience with the procedure. The solutions to remove fat are becoming more advanced and easy for the patient. This is a lot easier than going to gym and eating well but it is in no way a substitute for a healthy lifestyle! Non-invasive techniques can not help you lose weight or keep you healthy. They can only help remove areas of fat that are giving you a hard time. Getting rid of this stubborn fat may improve your self-confidence and encourage you to stick with your exercise routine and diet plan. Fat cells are killed permanently with CoolSculpting and Kybella but proper weight management is necessary to maintain your results.
