Sweating is the body’s way of cooling itself down in extreme heat situations. Some people, however, suffer from hyperhidrosis (or excessive sweating), causing them to sweat all the time in all temperature situations. Hyperhidrosis is caused by overactive sweat glands and is a great source of anxiety and embarrassment.
People with hyperhidrosis make great efforts to hide their sweating from others. This may include constantly applying antiperspirant, changing clothing several times throughout the day, or wearing dark clothing to better conceal any sweat stains. Some people are so distressed by their excessive sweating that they completely withdraw from social interactions. Children who sweat excessively often struggle in school, as they become an unfortunate victim of bullying and ridicule by their classmates.
Individuals suffering from excessive sweating have several options to consider. Surgery to remove the underarm sweat glands is highly effective; however many people are unable to undergo surgery due to its invasive nature and/or cost. Prescription antiperspirants may be prescribed, although they are not always effective and can become costly in the long run. Botox injections to the sweat glands can successfully treat excessive sweating; however, they must be repeated regularly and are expensive. Individuals suffering from excessive sweating have another option to consider, which does not involve hiding from others or avoiding light-colored clothing.
miraDry is a new, minimally-invasive treatment for excessive underarm sweating. It sends electromagnetic energy to the underarm sweat glands, eliminating them. Since sweat glands do not grow back, miraDry provides patients with lasting results. Patients that undergo miraDry save money compared to costly treatments that require repetition, not to mention the dry cleaning bills they incur from all their sweating. If you are seeking a non-invasive solution for your excessive sweating, schedule a consultation with one of our Upper East Side dermatologists.
During your miraDry consultation, your dermatologist will examine you and review your medical history. Most patients need two treatments, spaced three months apart, to achieve satisfactory results. If you qualify for miraDry, your treatments will be scheduled and your dermatologist will provide you with additional information on the treatment.
Your miraDry treatment will be performed at our Upper East Side (Park Avenue) office. To minimize discomfort, your underarms will be numbed prior to treatment. The miraDry handpiece is then passed through each underarm, at levels customized to your particular condition. Each miraDry condition lasts about an hour, and you will be able to return to work immediately after treatment.
Some patients experience temporary swelling after miraDry; however, this subsides within a few weeks. Exercise should be avoided for the first few days after treatment. Patients immediately notice a reduction in underarm sweating after miraDry. After both treatments, patients on average enjoy an 82 percent reduction in underarm sweating. Since miraDry eliminates the sweat glands, this treatment offers lasting results.
