FDA-approved CoolSculpting utilizes a targeted cooling process, Cryolipolysis™, to kill the fat cells that lie beneath the skin, freezing them to elimination. The process is able to specifically target only fat cells, leaving skin and other underlying cells untouched and healthy. The frozen, crystalized fat cells die and are naturally metabolized out of the body over a period of two to three months after the procedure. The effects are noticeable after one visit; typically patients see a reduction of 20 – 40% fat in the treated areas, and additional procedures can help patients lose even more fat.
Ideal candidates for CoolSculpting are patients who are close in range to their ideal body weight, with noticeable bulges in the specific areas they would like to get rid of. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution for patients who are obese, nor can it remove as large amounts of fat as surgical liposuction. A CoolSculpting procedure is simple and painless. At the start, the patient and the doctor will determine what areas will be treated. Then, the CoolSculpting device is placed upon the treatment area, which will begin to pull and push the fatty area between two cold panels. The treatment may take between one to three hours, depending upon the amount of fat and the breadth of the area to be treated. No anesthesia or pain medications are needed; patients initially may feel some pressure and cold, but this mild discomfort is only temporary and many patients even choose to nap during their procedure. The advantage of CoolSculpting over surgical liposuction is that there is no downtime needed for recovery; patients are free to resume their daily activities immediately after their procedure. Some patients experience common side effects with fat removal procedures such as bruising, loss of feeling in the treatment area, or minor discomfort, but these are temporary and will be gone as the body heals itself.
After the procedure, patients may see results in as early as three weeks; the most dramatic results will be apparent after two months, but the body will continue to metabolize fat cells for up to six months after treatment.
