Heat treatment is not for everyone. The idea of subjecting sensitive skin tissues to heat damage and allowing the body to heal itself is one that some patients may find precarious. At the same time, invasive procedures for very minor cosmetic blemishes are impractical. If you are mostly concerned with small areas of stubborn body fat that even extensive exercise cannot get rid of, then CoolSculpting may be the perfect procedure for you. Designed for healthy individuals who just want to slightly tweak the shape of their bodies, CoolSculpting is a noninvasive procedure that will allow your body to naturally remove the fat cells from areas of your choice. It is offered at our Ossining office in Westchester county (NY) as well as in other locations.
The science of CoolSculpting is actually quite simple. As a technological extension of research done by Harvard scientists, fat cells directly beneath the surface of the skin are subject to extreme cold temperatures in order to provoke their apoptotic reaction mechanisms. What this refers to is a self-induced cell death in response to cold surroundings. Using the body’s natural process of cleaning, these dead fat cells will be removed, leaving behind a slimmer figure. The most common area of CoolSculpting treatments are the flanks, also known as the love-handles. These areas are typically the most difficult to get rid of, but with CoolSculpting, this is no longer the case. In the few months following the initial treatment, you will see a gradual decline in the fat bulge, giving your body a more elegant, natural-looking leanness.
CoolSculpting relies on your body’s natural metabolism in concurrence with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. It is not a substitute for routine physical activity and is neither a treatment nor cure for obesity. During the procedure, patients will feel areas of concentrated cold, which may also be accompanied by a numbing or prickling sensation. While harmless, some patients may opt to apply a local ointment to reduce the amount of discomfort. Procedures can last up to two hours, but patients are free to do as they wish during this time. Unlike traditional liposuction surgeries, there is no downtime, and patients can return to work the day after treatment. Side effects may include some redness and inflammation, and in rare instances bruising. No serious complications have been reported.
