Top 10 Ways to Take Your Skincare to the Next Level

Advanced Dermatology, PC Blog Top 10 Ways to Take Your Skincare to the Next Level

You’ve already got your simple skincare routine down to a science: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. Even if your routine is working for you, you might be wondering what you could add to encourage even better results. If you’d like a little extra glow in your day-to-day, then let’s talk about 10 of our favorite ways to amp up your skincare routine.

  1. Exfoliate regularly – but not too often

Exfoliating keeps dead skin cells from causing a dull, dry complexion, so it’s a logical next step when building your skincare routine out from the basics. The key to exfoliating is timing. If you never do it, your skin will appear dull, but if you do it every day, you could trigger redness, irritation, and dryness. To add this powerhouse to your skincare routine, choose a nice exfoliating scrub, and use it once a week for a baby-smooth complexion.

  2. Clean your makeup brushes once a week

This one might escape your notice, but if you’re a person who wears a lot of makeup, set a reminder to clean your makeup brushes and sponges once a week. The leftover product and bacteria buildup is a perfect breakout-causing storm. No fancy cleaners are needed – just plain old-fashioned soap and water.

  3. Toss a skincare emergency kit in your gym bag

Sweaty skin equals clogged pores, and while your workouts are good for your health, they might be clogging up your skin! Invest in a travel kit that contains your skincare basics (no comma) and toss it in your gym bag with a fresh washcloth to keep from having post-workout breakouts.

  4. Add a weekly mask

Incorporating a little self-care into your routine can do you a world of good, so treat yourself to a nice face mask once or twice a week. Dry skin types might benefit from a mask containing hyaluronic acid or rose oil. If you have oily skin prone to breakouts, opt for a clay mask that can draw out impurities!

  5. Protect yourself with sunscreen

Sun damage has been shown to contribute to premature aging as well as increase one’s risk of skin cancer. It can also exacerbate certain skin conditions including rosacea. One should use a “broad spectrum” sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If outside for more than a few hours, swimming or working up a sweat, reapplication is essential. There are moisturizers and makeups with sunscreens in them so one could get the “two for one” benefit.

  6. Dry lips? Try this.

If you struggle with dry lips, it might be time to consider a lip mask. Swipe it on before bed and wake up with soft, hydrated lips that are less prone to chapping. Lip masks can be found anywhere you might buy cosmetics, and you can also try making your own at home. One of our favorite recipes? A simple two-ingredient mixture of honey and coconut oil.

  7. Add a little spice to your life

Ingredients like turmeric, black pepper, and ginger all have antioxidant and anti-aging properties, but did you know you can do more than add them to your food? Look for these ingredients on skincare labels, and reap the antioxidant benefits for your complexion, too.

  8. Invest in satin

Did you know? Satin pillowcases provide less friction against the skin, which can help prevent the formation of wrinkles on the face. Bonus: it’s excellent for your hair, too, causing less breakage and leading to smoother locks!

  9. Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Don’t smoke! It can contribute to wrinkles and premature aging. Easier said than done so see your primary care physician for strategies on quitting or cutting down.

Try eating healthier. You are what you eat! Many foods may exacerbate skin issues. Avoid processed foods or foods high in fat and eat plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Hydration is also important. Eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day is recommended.

Stress management can help prevent certain skin issues including acne breakouts. A good night’s sleep and finding healthy, relaxing, and fun things to do are important. Try listening to music or experiencing aromatherapy with or without meditation. Exercising regularly has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress.

  10. Tailor your routines for the morning and the evening

Your skincare routines should be a little different in the morning than it is at night. Your morning skincare routine is about preparing you for the day and protecting you from the elements: this is when we most often put on sunscreen. Focus on repairing your skin in the evenings, and choose a heavier moisturizer with anti-aging properties like retinol or Vitamin A.
