Hyperhidrosis and sweating

Warmer weather is on its way,
are you going to let excessive sweating keep you from enjoying it?

With warmer weather coming people with hyperhidrosis, a condition where a person sweats excessively, may be dreading the embarrassing underarm sweat they’ll experience. Having a shirt stained with sweat is a sure way to lose confidence to do the things you want to do. Luckily there’s a new simple solution that only requires a few treatments and will permanently stop problem sweating. First let’s learn a bit about underarm sweat and its causes.

WHAT CAUSES SWEATING?

The body has millions of sweat glands, most of which are “eccrine” glands that secrete an odorless fluid that cools the body. For the majority of people who experience hyperhidrosis their eccrine glands are responsible. The glands involved in underarm sweat are “apocrine” glands. The sweat from apocrine glands produces body odor when it comes in contact with bacteria on the skin’s surface. Eccrine and apocrine sweat glands both can be stimulated by high temperatures, hormones, emotions, and physical activity. Hyperhidrosis is the overreaction of sweat glands to these stimuli. Whether your sweating is excessive or not is really about your own perception. If you think that your sweating is excessive and that it’s a problem, then it is! There are several different treatment options available if you feel that your sweating is excessive.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

There are both over-the-counter and prescription antiperspirants available to prevent sweating. If over-the-counter antiperspirants aren’t working for you then contact your dermatologist who may be able to prescribe you a higher strength prescription antiperspirant. Botox injections done by an experienced dermatologist under the arms can also dramatically reduce sweating. This solution results in the majority of patients seeing an over 50% reduction in sweating. The effects of Botox injections under the arms can last six months to a year and the treatment needs to be redone after that time to maintain results. A much more permanent solution is miraDry, a treatment that reduces underarm sweating on average by 82% by eliminating sweat glands under the arms. Results are both immediate and long lasting. The miraDry treatment is specifically designed to stop underarm sweating and can’t be used on other areas of the body. Sweating under the arms can be a significant problem for some people but underarm sweating in general is not necessary for the body to regulate temperature. Less than 2% of the body’s sweat glands are located under the arm and eliminating them entirely through miraDry treatments has no effect on thermoregulation.
