4 Skincare Tips that Dermatologists Use
Posted by Dr. Robert Levine on April 12, 2022

Who knows better how to take care of your skin than your dermatologist? Check out these 4 dermatologist-approved skin tips to keep you looking clear and fresh.

#1: Wear sunscreen every day.

One of the most important things you can do for your skin is to start a daily sunscreen habit. Applying it correctly can protect you from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which contribute to sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. You’ll find the best protection comes from water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. Apply it to all skin not covered by clothing, and if you go swimming, make sure to reapply every 2 hours.  Since no sunscreen can block all UV rays, it’s essential to stay in the shade or wear hats and other sun-protective clothing.

#2: Avoid tanning beds.

Tanning beds are one of the quickest ways to accelerate aging! Like the sun, they emit those cancer-causing UV rays. They’re so harmful that just one session in a tanning bed can increase your chances of skin cancer. Choose self-tanning lotions and oils for a sun-kissed look, which adds some attractive color to the skin without damaging it.

#3: Simplify your skincare routine.

When it comes to skincare, it’s best to keep it simple. Using too many different products can irritate your skin. This is true with anti-aging products, which contain some ingredients that are best used in small amounts. Focus on having a good, basic skincare routine: cleanser, sunscreen, and moisturizer. After that, you can add a serum or a toner based on your skin’s needs. The most important part is to stick with the routines you create because it’s the consistency of the routine that produces good results.

#4 Choose skincare products formulated for your skin type.

If you want to take your skincare routine to the next level, take the time to understand your skin type. If you know what your skin needs, you’re better able to understand what products to select. But how do you know what skin type you have?

Here are a few things that may clue you in:

  • If you have normal skin, your skin is clear and doesn’t usually break out. It also typically isn’t too greasy or dry.
  • If you have sensitive skin, your face may sting after product use.
  • If you have dry skin, your face may sometimes be flaky, itchy, or rough. You may feel like you need moisturizer several times a day.
  • If you have combination skin, you’ll find you are dry in some areas and oily in others.
  • If you have oily skin, you will struggle with being shiny and greasy.
