Cellulite FAQ

What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a highly undesirable manifestation of the warping of the fat layers beneath the skin. Cellulite occurs when the fat layer underneath the dermis (the subcutaneous fat layer) take on irregular shapes and distorts the collagen fiber columns. When this occurs, the skin becomes pulled and pushed in multiple directions from below the surface, resulting in a dimpled surface that can resemble cottage cheese. Women are more prone to cellulite than men as women’s fat cells are structured differently and women have more pockets of stored fat than men.

What causes cellulite?
Contrary to popular belief, cellulite can form on anybody, regardless of weight or age. Even thin, model type women who eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly can have cellulite. Some people are more prone to cellulite due to genetic factors, and hormones play a large part – especially estrogen. Of course, poor diet and exercise can exacerbate the body’s natural inclination towards cellulite; extreme dieting or binging can distort the fat cells’ shape and cause dimpling.

Can cellulite be treated?
Yes, there have been many dermalogical advances to treat cellulite. In its earliest stages, cellulite can be entirely eradicated with prompt treatment, and even long-term, severe cellulite’s appearance can be reduced. The latest advances in cellulite treatment utilize the concept of dermatological re-sculpture, which involves reshaping the subcutaneous layers.

What cellulite treatments can Advanced Dermatology offer me?
Our experienced dermatologists (we now have offices serving Summit & Ridgewood New Jersey as well as our other tri-state locations) utilize Endermologie® treatments to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Endermologie works by using a device called the Cellu M6 to stimulate the epidermis. The device will lift, roll, and massage the skin, prompting the body’s natural response to tighten the skin and eliminate fat and toxins. The procedure is non-surgical and non-invasive, and takes advantage of the body’s natural healing responses rather than introducing foreign elements.

What results can I expect from Endermologie?
Endermologie is not a replacement for liposuction, and should not be thought of as a weight-loss tool. Patients who choose an Endermologie procedure will notice a lessening in the appearance of their cellulite; dimples will become shallower and skin smoother. If treated early enough, cellulite can be banished completely.
