The biggest recent trend in cosmetic procedures is a shift towards more minimally invasive techniques and away from surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, total minimally invasive cosmetic procedures increased by 6% between 2011-2012 (the most recent data available) while total cosmetic surgical procedures decreased by 2% over the same period. In 2012 alone about 14,629,276 cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. with about 90% of them being minimally invasive. This move indicates an increase in the development and use of safe and effective cosmetic procedures that require little to no downtime and also a growing acceptance of cosmetic procedures in general.
The most popular minimally invasive treatment continues to be Botox with an increase of 8% between 2011-12 to a total number of 6.1 million procedures performed that year. Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure but decreased by 7% over the same period to 286,000 procedures. Based on regional statistics, chemical peels and microdermabrasion are very popular as well in the New England area.
The minimally invasive methods now used are due to the development of new technologies such as radiofrequency, ultrasound, lasers, and more. Cosmetic procedures were not always as safe and effective as they are today. In the 16th and 17th centuries, for example, women would put belladonna in their eyes to dilate their pupils – often risking blindness or retinal damage.
Thanks to modern advances people don’t need to go through drastic and painful procedures to look good. Now we have non-invasive procedures that improve the appearance of skin by toning and reducing wrinkles. These procedures don’t take long, require little to no downtime, and are relatively painless. As long as cosmetic procedures like this continue to become more safe and effective they will only grow in popularity. Ultimately the decision is between you and your doctor, who can help you determine if a cosmetic procedure is right for you.
