Neck Lift Surgery

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift can surgically correct loose skin, fat, or banding on the neck. It may be performed on individuals with visible signs of aging on their neck or those who have lost a significant amount of weight. Neck lift surgery may consist of liposuction, cervicoplasty and/or platysmaplasty, and is commonly combined with facelift, brow lift or eyelid surgery procedures.

Neck Lift Procedure

Neck lift surgery takes several hours to perform; the exact amount of time depends on the specific procedure(s) being performed. Neck lift is usually performed with the patient under general or local anesthesia.

Neck Liposuction

Neck liposuction is beneficial for anyone whose neck is marred by the appearance of excess fat. After an incision is made beneath the chin, a cannula is inserted and excess fat is broken up and removed. Sutures are used to close the incision.

Cervicoplasty

Cervicoplasty is performed to remove loose skin from the neck. Through an incision under the chin and behind the ears, skin is cut and lifted. Incisions are closed with sutures or adhesives.

Platysmaplasty

Platysmaplasty reduces the appearance of banding on the neck and is performed through incisions behind the ears and/or under the chin. Neck muscles are repositioned or removed, and remaining neck muscles are sutured together.

Recovery

Most patients return home the same day as their neck lift. For the first two weeks after surgery, swelling and bruising may occur. The results of a neck lift should be fully noticeable within three to six months.

Risks

Risks associated with neck lift surgery may include infection, skin numbness, bruising, or complications from the anesthesia. To minimize the occurrence of complications, always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon and carefully follow all preoperative and postoperative instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of an aging neck. A neck lift reduces baggy skin and excess fat from around the neck, improving the contour and definition of the neckline. This type of plastic surgery is extremely effective at minimizing the signs of aging on the neck.

How can a neck lift help me look my best?

As we grow older, our skin becomes looser and begins to sag. This may cause the appearance of bands around the neck, a double chin, or “turkey neck” (loose skin that hangs below the chin). In addition, fine lines and wrinkles form easily on the delicate skin of the neck. A neck lift is designed to address all of these issues. By tightening the skin and muscles and/or removing excess fat and tissue, the neck will appear rejuvenated and more youthful.

Can a neck lift be combined with other procedures?

A necklift can safely be combined with other cosmetic surgeries to provide more dramatic results. Many patients choose to undergo a necklift and a facelift at the same time. Other popular choices include a brow lift or eyelid surgery.

How is a neck lift performed?

A neck lift typically takes several hours to perform, during which time the patient will be under general anesthesia or a combination of intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. The plastic surgeon will begin by making a small incision in a well-concealed place under the patient’s chin. Excess fat and tissue will be removed, and then extra skin will be trimmed. Finally, the doctor will carefully suture the incision to minimize any visible scarring.

Will there be any scarring?

After some time, the scar will be nearly undetectable. The incision will be made under the chin and within a natural skin crease, so the likelihood of a visible scar from a necklift is minimal.

How long is the recovery period? What should I expect during this time?

Your recovery period will vary based upon the extent of revisions being made and may be longer if additional procedures are planned for the same time. Most patients are able to return home the same day as their neck lift. Swelling and bruising is normal and expected for the first 2 weeks after surgery. Your doctor will provide you with instructions that will help you minimize discomfort during the recovery period. You must avoid strenuous activities for at least 6 weeks following surgery, but should be able to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks. The full results of your necklift should be visible within 3 to 6 months.

What is neck liposuction?

In some cases, your doctor may recommend that you undergo neck liposuction to reduce excess fat on the neck. This may be combined with a neck lift or performed on its own. An incision will be made under the chin, and then a canunula will be used to break up and remove excess fat.
