Cellulite is deposits of fat and other material trapped in pockets of connective tissue beneath the skin. It causes progressive dimpling, also called “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” appearance of the skin. About 90 % of women are affected by it, after they reach puberty so it is fairly normal to have.
Cellulite is caused by factors which influence where and how fat is stored, where and how fluid is retained, and the amount and arrangement of collagen and elastin fibers in the connective tissue layers of the skin. Factors influencing cellulite include genetic predisposition, hormones, hydration, diet, exercise, stress, drugs and medications.
When normal fatty tissue is stored, it is held in place by a network of collagen and elastin fibers and is supplied by a network of vascular and lymph vessels. When the system works well, the vascular system takes energy from the fat stores when required, and toxins are flushed away via the lymphatics. When the waste removal system starts to fail, waste products start building up and the connective tissue becomes saturated with fluid and is often inflamed and swollen. Growing fat cells (adipocytes) destroy the network of collagen and elastin fibers, which then thicken (fibrose) around these cells forming hard pockets of fat, encroaching on vascular and lymphatic vessels. The hardened pockets of fat are the cause of the “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” appearance known as cellulite.
Cellulite occasionally becomes painful if the pressure within the pockets of fat becomes too high. Cellulite can be diagnosed and categorized into four stages. The more advanced the condition of cellulite, the greater the effort required to treat it. When treating cellulite, the congested lymph and waste system may need to be cleared, the fibrosis around the hardened pockets of fat may need to be softened or broken down and the weak network of collagen and elastin fibers may need to be strengthened and re-modeled.
ENDERMOLOGIE® will treat cellulite at all these levels. Treatments for cellulite such as creams, lotions and even liposuction remain largely unsuccessful because they only target the appearance of cellulite. It is finally understood that the ‘orange peel’ affect on the surface of the skin is a symptom of an underlying cause. ‘Cellulite does not respond well to weight loss, exercise, creams or liposuction. The only FDA approved method to reduce cellulite is ENDERMOLOGIE®
What is ENDERMOLOGIE®
ENDERMOLOGIE® is the first cellulite treatment that has been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It was developed in the early 1980’s by Louis-Paul Guitay (hence LPG ENDERMOLOGIE®). This LPG technology is developed effectively to reduce the appearance of cellulite and can sometimes give you dramatic improvement in your hips, thighs, and buttocks. It is also useful in shaping your body around the abdomen or wherever you have the dimpled or cottage cheese appearance of skin containing cellulite. This painless procedure works very well for reshaping and contouring your body. The frequency and amount of ENDERMOLOGIE® treatments depends on the patient’s condition.
How does it work?
The treatment includes, gentle suction of skin and massage to your epidermis, dermis, and fat where the cellulite condition resides. This increases circulation and stimulates the subcutaneous and deep layers of fat and muscle. It is thought that the increased blood flow helps to shrink the fat cells. The mechanical action of the procedure also stimulates the dermis, improves circulation and increases the exfoliation of skin cells which adds to the enhanced appearance of the skin.
How the procedure performed?
On your first treatment you will receive a consultation whereby the condition of your cellulite will be discussed between you and your therapist. A program will be agreed to suit your own personal needs. A before and after photograph may also be taken in order for you to see the best of your results!
During the treatment you will wear a specialized body stocking. This is to make it more comfortable and also to protect your modesty! The therapist carries out the treatment which involves a hand held massaging head which delivers intermittent suction and rolling action to the area being treated. Each treatment will last approximately 35 minutes, at the frequency of about 1 to 2 sessions per week.
This is not a painful treatment and most people describe it as being most relaxing as it simulates a body massage. The quantity of treatments depends on each individual, however, we recommend that you have a minimum of 10 sessions in order to benefit fully. Its use can be accompanied by some weight loss. It is also an excellent compliment to liposuction.
What to expect?
This is not a permanent solution to reduction in cellulite, but after your initial course of treatments, you may find that a ‘maintenance schedule’ of monthly treatments is sufficient. Usually patients notice changes within 6 or 8 sessions. However, 14 is the average number of treatments recommended.
The rolling and sucking action of the machine work together to ‘stretch’ the septa back to an upright position. The septa attaches the skin to the fat cells and when it is out of shape due to genetic and lifestyle factors, it starts to bend sideways causing the dimple effect.
The action of the machine once again promotes elimination of “toxins” which are present in the affected area and helps to restore its smoothness and fight the orange peel effect. Anyone can benefit from having ENDERMOLOGIE®, providing the client has none of the listed contra-indications which are discussed in the first consultation. It is known that more women than men suffer from Cellulite, however anyone can develop it!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Why do woman have cellulite and men don’t?
There are numerous differences between men and women; one of these concerns the structure of the fat layer just under the skin. The septa (as discussed earlier) is formed of a vertical box-like structure in women. As for men, the septa is formed in a lattice-like structure, thus giving more support for the fat cells, resulting in none or less cellulite than in women.
Why are women prone to develop cellulite?
Women’s skin is built differently than men’s to help them to store fat during pregnancy and breast feeding and also to allow the skin to expand during these times. When estrogen levels fluctuate in the body, the skin will retain fluid, connective tissue in the skin hardens, blood, and lymphatic circulation is decreased, and fat cell storage is favored, causing the development of cellulite.
How does the machine work?
The Keymodule’s small hand-held, motorized treatment head with specially designed rollers performs the ENDERMOLOGIE treatment. By gently lifting and rolling the skin the Cellu M6 Keymodule stimulates the venous and lymphatic systems thereby eliminating toxins. Fiboblasts are stimulated to the increase collagen and elastin production generating a healthier rejuvenated skin tone. The treatment also smoothes the surface of the skin by softening the connective tissue, that anchors the skin, causing the dimples of cellulite.Who is performing the treatment? All treatments are performed by a qualified ENDERMOLOGIE Therapist. All ENDERMOLOGIE Therapists are trained and certified by LPG Systems.
How long does a session last?
A session lasts for 35 minutes. The main focus of the treatment is directed to the problem areas, but the entire body must be treated in order to stimulate general circulation and elimination of broken up toxic matters.
How many sessions do I need to start seeing results?
Results vary for every person, however an average person starts to notice the changes after about 6-8 sessions.
How many treatments should I consider to begin with?
A series of 14 sessions would be a good start to achieve results. The first 6 treatments are suggested within a 2 week time period, than the rest of the treatments should be received twice a week until desired look is achieved. After the desired look is achieved, a once a month maintenance is sufficient for most individuals. There are other treatment protocols that we also utilize depending on the patient.
How long should I continue my treatments?
We suggest that you approach cellulite treatment as a lifestyle change. Just as we go to have our hair cut on an ongoing basis, we need our cellulite treated regularly as well. If we don’t address the problem in such manner, cellulite will come back.
Does the procedure hurt?
Rest assured that you are in the best possible hands. With your highly trained therapist, and the machine’s capability of changing intensity, you won’t need to be in pain. It is a non-invasive, relaxing treatment that involves no medical procedures or use of any chemical substances, creams or gels.
What do I wear during treatments?
We will provide you with a body stocking, to wear during all of your sessions. The stocking is worn for modesty and hygiene.
Can everyone receive the treatment?
No. It is not for pregnant women, or people taking blood thinners, people with circulatory or vascular disease, active cancer, and also with infectious progressive diseases, and AIDS. Should you have any other concerns; we recommend that you consult your physician.
Does the treatment have any side effects?
The only negative side effect possible is minor bruising for individuals with very sensitive skin. However there are numerous positive side effects, such as relieving muscle soreness, fading of stretch marks and scar tissue, feeling rejuvenated, and relaxed.
Is it a weight loss program?
No, in order to lose weight you need to get on an exercise and diet program. However you can achieve incredible results by combining this treatment with weight loss programs. As a result of the treatment, you’ll notice your clothes fitting better, and also you’ll lose some inches in circumferential body measurements.
Do I need to do anything to get good results?
Yes. Drink sufficient amount of water. You will receive information during your free initial consultation on the amount of water your body needs.
Does this treatment work on men also?
Definitely. Even though men are not prone to develop cellulite, they might have loose skin, or some fat trapped under the skin, that can be improved by the treatments. Clinical experience has shown excellent results for problem areas such as “love handles” and loose pectoral tissue. It is an excellent skin toner; therefore it is the best choice to treat the skin after weight loss that resulted in loose skin.
What is the difference between ENDERMOLOGIE® and Liposuction?
ENDERMOLOGIE® treatments are non-invasive and improve the health of connective tissue. Liposuction is an invasive surgical procedure aimed at removing deep fat tissue from an area. Doctors often recommend ENDERMOLOGIE® treatments in conjunction with liposuction to minimize the trauma cause by the scaring and inflammation of the procedure and to improve the health of the tissue.
Are the results permanent?
If the factors causing the initial condition are not changed, the tissue will return to the state it was in before ENDERMOLOGIE®. Regular exercise, a balanced diet and 1 to 2 ENDERMOLOGIE® maintenance treatments per month are ideally recommended to help keep the results achieved.
