The function of the Joint Commission is to certify and monitor medical facilities to ensure that they exhibit the highest quality of patient care, as well as demonstrate excellence and due diligence in reporting to regulatory agencies and managed care organizations. New York is among the many states taking measures to ensure quality improvement in health care and the protection of public safety. In July of 2007, New York State passed a law mandating all physicians that perform office-based surgery requiring anesthesia or sedation to have their offices inspected and accredited or face penalties from the State Medical Board. When scheduling a surgery, take the advice of the New York State Medical Board and make sure that the surgery is performed in an accredited facility.
