Keloids are abnormal scars that can be a result of a surgery, cosmetic procedure or minor trauma including ear piercing or acne breakouts. For many years, keloid scars were difficult to treat because any method of removal can lead to a recurrence of the keloid, sometimes larger and more painful. Traditional treatments can be painful, ineffective and cannot be used on children. Standard radiation can be used but this poses a risk to deeper organs and may not be safe for younger patients.
At Advanced Dermatology, we offer Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT-100) for the treatments of keloids. Keloids can now be successfully treated and prevented with this life changing procedure at our NY and NJ offices. SRT is precise and only targets superficial skin with sparing of deeper muscle, bone and cartilage. It does not affect other organs
How does Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) work for removal of keloids?
SRT targets the cells that causes the abnormal and overabundance of scar tissue. The scar tissue bundle first must be excised by shave removal or regular excision. Our dermatologists can excise the keloid. Within 24 hours of removal the area should be treated with SRT to reduce the production of abnormal collagen. It is recommended that 2-3 consecutive daily treatments be performed for the best results and to prevent recurrences. The procedure is painless and well tolerated. There are no restrictions and no down-time.
Am I a candidate?
Candidates with unsightly and painful scars and keloids will benefit from SRT. Children will benefit with this safe procedure. Some insurance companies may cover the SRT procedure for treatment of symptomatic keloids. Our dermatologists can help you decide if the SRT is right for you and if your insurance will cover the procedure.
What are the benefits?
The most important benefits of the SRT-100 treatment include:
- 95% and higher cure rate for keloids
- No damage to surrounding healthy skin
- Can be used in children
- No significant side effects
- No pain or discomfort
- Short treatment sessions (typically 3 treatment is needed)
