NATURAL HAIR TRANSPLANTSM
WHY A HAIR TRANSPLANT?
You’re only as old as you feel. But to others, you’re as old as you look! At Advanced Dermatology P.C. and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery’s Natural Hair Transplant Center we know how to make people look and feel better about themselves.
Since balding is a continuous process, our doctors must anticipate how your hairline will look as you grow older. By understanding the natural biology of hair follicles, we are able to ensure that you will have a natural appearance in just 6 months and that your hair will continue to look natural for the next 30 years.
Our dermatologists specialize in conditions of the scalp and are able to tell if there are any underlying reasons for your hair loss. Sometimes a hair transplant may not be necessary if an underlying problem is treated.
As you read through this brochure, you will see why our Natural Hair Transplant technique is the best procedure for men and women contemplating surgical hair replacement.
Hair Transplant is the relocation of growing hair follicles to places on the scalp that are thinning or balding. These follicles will continue to grow in their new location indefinitely.
Even in the most advanced cases of male pattern baldness, there is an area of hair on the back of a man’s head that will never go bald. This horseshoe-shaped area is the “donor site” and persists behind the ears and across the lower portion of the back of the scalp. Hair follicles are moved from this donor site and transplanted to the bald areas (the “recipient sites”). The newly transplanted hairs will now grow indefinitely, and will no longer be affected by the balding process. Even the very first transplants done in 1960 are still growing today! This is the principle of “Donor Dominance”.
Between 1960 and 1990, there was only one method of hair transplantation available. Large round “plugs”, consisting of approximately 12-15 hairs each, were taken from the donor area and transplanted to the recipient area.
A series of these plugs were placed in rows, on the front of the scalp, to re-create the hairline. Unfortunately, there were two significant problems with this method: First, the transplanted plugs were large, and contained so many hairs, that they produced noticeable “tufts” of hair on the scalp. This tufted appearance resembled a “doll’s head”. Secondly, the arrangement of plugs in rows produced a contrived, grid-like pattern, similar to “rows of corn”. Since natural hair does not grow this way, the distribution of these plugs looked unnatural.
NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART METHODS
By 1990, hair replacement surgeons recognized the need for new techniques that would more closely create a natural hairline and eliminate the unattractive “tufts” and “corn rows” seen with the larger plugs. As physicians worldwide started to investigate alternative methods of hair transplantation, new techniques evolved. The transplants performed at the Natural Hair Transplant Center, emphasize the artful placement of smaller grafts called minigrafts and micrografts.
Minigrafts are much smaller than the older plugs used in the past. Instead of having 12-15 hairs, they contain only 2-4 hairs. Minigrafts are evenly distributed throughout the frontal and crown regions of the scalp and appear more natural.
The minigrafts are small enough that they blend into one another, instead of standing out as “tufts” of hair. We use special techniques in order to place these grafts in random fashion. This helps to avoid visible rows and grid-like patterns that catch the eye. The grafts are angled such that the direction of the new hairs flows with the inborn pattern. Since minigrafts contain only 2-4 hairs, large numbers are transplanted to an area to create sufficient density. Typically, 300-800 minigrafts are transplanted in one session over several hours.
Micrografts are the smallest grafts of all and consist of a single strand of hair. Micrografts are used in a very special manner along the hairline. On close inspection, an inborn hairline seems to consist of a few isolated hairs staggered along the frontal scalp. As one looks further back into the hairline, the hairs appear closer together, creating some density. During a Natural Hair Transplant, the density behind the hairline is reproduced by using minigrafts of 2-4 hairs, while the smaller micrografts are placed along the frontal hairline as isolated, single hairs. This combination of minigrafts and micrografts creates the soft, feathered appearance of a natural hairline.
1) Lasers: In hair transplant surgery, lasers may play a role in creating the recipient sites (the tiny holes and slits in which the minigrafts and micrografts are placed). This may result in less bleeding, less post-operative swelling and more efficient surgery.
At Advanced Dermatology P.C. and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery we have several state-of-the-art lasers. Various studies are in progress comparing laser-assisted hair transplantation to the more traditional methods. You and your hair transplant surgeon will decide whether or not lasers are right for you.
2) Scalp Reductions: Scalp reductions are not indicated for the majority of patients. They involve the surgical removal of large areas of balding scalp. With this procedure, there is an increased chance of scarring and deformity, and multiple sessions are required (often 5 or more) to camouflage the surgical scars. Experience shows that this technique also leads to a thinning of the remaining hairs on the outside rim of the scalp.
3) Hair Growth Regimen: Minoxidil (Rogaine) combined in varying strengths with our special mixture of tretinoin can stimulate hair follicles to grow in many patients. We often prescribe topical minoxidil therapy in conjunction with hair transplants to help maintain regrowth of transplanted hairs.
4) Hair Weaves/Wigs: Hair weaves and wigs are appropriate for patients who are unable or unwilling to have a hair transplant. Unfortunately, this method can limit a person’s lifestyle (i.e., exercise, swimming, wind, perspiration, etc.). The hairpiece may require frequent maintenance and may look unnatural. Significantly, the long term cost of a hair weave is often higher than that of a hair transplant. In addition, there is a risk of further hair loss from the periodic tightening and retying of the wig.
5) New Drugs and Therapies: We are constantly trying to maximize the Natural Hair Transplant process with adjunctive therapies. As innovative therapies become available, we remain at the forefront.
SPECIAL CANDIDATES FOR HAIR TRANSPLANTS:
Previously transplanted patients: Patients transplanted with the older “plug” method are often great candidates for our new procedure. The Natural Hair Transplant System camouflages the tufted “doll’s head” appearance of the older transplants, and restores one’s natural look.
Women: More and more women with androgenetic alopecia are having hair transplants. The cosmetic result is often excellent. Estrogen replacement and minoxidil therapy are effective adjunctive treatments.
African-Americans: Excellent results are achievable for African-American patients. Because the hair is so curly, special techniques are used to prepare and transplant the grafts. Pre-transplant testing is also done, because of the possibility of keloidal scarring.
The state-of-the-art in Natural Hair Transplant surgery involves the transplantation of minigrafts and micrografts from the donor scalp to the recipient area. This technique ensures a natural-appearing hairline that is apparent several months after the procedure.
At Advanced Dermatology P.C. and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery we approach each hair transplant as a single session. By starting with the proper hairline design, usually one that frames the face, our patients are not required to come back for future sessions. Although some patients may return to achieve a fuller head of hair, one session is all you need and your hairline will look natural for the rest of your life!
AM I A CANDIDATE?
Some men are comfortable in their baldness, and no intervention is necessary. Others feel restricted socially and professionally. If you’ve ever felt diminished self-esteem because of hair loss, or embarrassment during swimming or sports, then you should consider a hair transplant. Our technique is safe and effective, and ensures a natural looking head of hair for the rest of your life.
Most men that undergo hair transplant surgery are between the ages of 25-65 years old, but there are exceptions. If you are generally healthy, if your wounds heal normally, if you have no bleeding problems, then you are most likely a good candidate for the procedure.
Hair loss varies from individual to individual. Men with complete or substantial hair loss obviously require more intervention than those with minimal hair loss. The Natural Hair Transplant Center offers you the opportunity to meet with one of our doctors to discuss your particular situation. There is no charge for the consultation.
CAN I AFFORD A HAIR TRANSPLANT?
We believe in keeping our fees modest, so that all those who wish to have a transplant can do so. Our state-of-the-art technique is similar to those of the larger hair transplant chains, but our fees are generally lower, sometimes less than half the price. Sessions start at about $2000 and can be as low as $4 per graft.
Furthermore, a recent survey revealed a large cost difference between hair transplants and hair weaves. The long term cost of a hair weave (which requires frequent maintenance) is significantly higher than that of a hair transplant (which requires no maintenance).
A hair transplant is a lifetime investment and benefits are reaped over the years to come.
Anyone contemplating a hair transplant should first be evaluated by a physician. At Advanced Dermatology P.C. and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery’s Natural Hair Transplant Center our physicians are board certified dermatologists who are experts in hair loss and its treatments. Collectively, our dermatologists are members of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.
Hair loss varies from individual to individual. Men with substantial hair loss obviously require more intervention than those with partial or minimal hair loss.
We offer our patients the opportunity to meet with a Natural Hair Transplant physician to determine the optimal approach for their particular situation. Since more than one approach is often available, the final choice is always up to you.
Please call to make an appointment for a consultation. Our doctors will be happy to discuss your treatment options and give you the best advice for achieving a natural head of hair. Call for more information and/or for a consultation (Call 1-800-424-7872).
